Relativistic Gravity Theory And Related Tests With A Mercury Orbiter Mission
نویسندگان
چکیده
Due to its relatively large eccentricity and proximity to the Sun, Mercury’s orbital motion provides one of the best solar-system tests of relativistic gravity. We emphasize the number of feasible relativistic gravity tests that can be performed within the context of the parameterized weak field and slow motion approximation a useful framework for testing modern gravitational theories in the solar system. We discuss a new approximation method, which includes two Eddington parameters (γ, β), proposed for construction of the relativistic equations of motion of extended bodies. Within the present accuracy of radio measurements, we discuss the generalized Fermi-normal-like proper reference frame which is defined in the immediate vicinity of the extended compact bodies. Based on the Hermean-centric equations of motion of the spacecraft around the planet Mercury, we suggest a new test of the Strong Equivalence Principle. The corresponding experiment could be performed with the future Mercury Orbiter mission scheduled by the European Space Agency (ESA) for launch between 2006 and 2016. We discuss other relativistic effects including the perihelion advance, redshift and geodetic precession of the orbiter’s orbital plane about Mercury. Radio Science Investigation on a Mercury Orbiter Mission
We review the results from Mariner 10 regarding Mercury’s gravity field and the results from radar ranging regarding topography. We discuss the implications of improving these results, including a determination of the polar component, as well as the opportunity to perform relativistic gravity tests with a future Mercury Orbiter. With a spacecraft placed in orbit with periherm at 400 km altitude...
متن کاملRelativistic Navigation: A Theoretical Foundation
We present a theoretical foundation for relativistic astronomical measurements in curved space-time. In particular, we discuss a new iterative approach for describing the dynamics of an isolated astronomical N-body system in metric theories of gravity. To do this, we generalize the Fock-Chandrasekhar method of the weakfield and slow-motion approximation (WFSMA) and develop a theory of relativis...

The Radio science experiment of the BepiColombo mission to the planet Mercury shall allow to solve for the gravity field of the planet up to degree and order 25, for an improved orbit of Mercury and a very accurate verification of Einstein’s theory of gravitation, for measuring the rotation state of the planet, for mapping the topography (in combination with a laser altimeter). To actually obta...

متن کاملA Search for New Physics with the BEACON Mission
The primary objective of the Beyond Einstein Advanced Coherent Optical Network (BEACON) mission is a search for new physics beyond general relativity by measuring the curvature of relativistic space-time around Earth. This curvature is characterized by the Eddington parameter γ – the most fundamental relativistic gravity parameter and a direct measure for the presence of new physical interactio...
